Residency
Be a legal resident of Indiana or primarily employed in Indiana.
Background check
Indiana State Police limited criminal history record no older than 30 days from the application date. The INBiz page lists a $16.32 fee to obtain that record.
Education and exam
All applicants must take a notary education course and pass an exam. The course and exam are available after paying the application fee.
Application fee (as posted)
Initial or renewal application $75.00, nonrefundable.
Term / education later
Continuing education every two years. The page describes three continuing-education courses over an 8-year commission.

How to get started

  1. Get the Indiana State Police limited criminal history

    Download it within 14 days after it runs. INBiz walks through that record.

  2. Pay the application fee, then take the course and exam

    After you pass, the application goes to the Secretary of State for final review.

  4. Register on StampSide

    After you use the Indiana Secretary of State / INBiz site, create a public page: photo, where you work, and how clients reach you. You can appear in the Indiana directory. The page stays unpublished until a commission is on file.
