Residency

SOS FAQs: Mississippi resident for more than 30 days. The application form’s certification also requires U.S. citizenship or permanent legal residence, ability to read and write English, no felony conviction and not presently incarcerated or on parole, and no denial, revocation, suspension, restriction, or resignation of a notarial commission here or in another state or nation.

Fee (as posted)

$25 application fee. Form NP-001: return the application and $25.00 to Secretary of State, Business Services Division, P.O. Box 136, Jackson, MS 39205-0136.

Bond and oath

File a $5,000 surety bond and the oath of office with the Secretary of State. NP-001 warns that if you do not submit the bond within 60 days, the application lapses and you start over. Rules require the oath in the presence of a Mississippi notary, on SOS forms.

Journal and seal

FAQs: obtain an official seal or stamp showing your county of residence, and maintain a registry of all documents signed as the statutes require.

How to get started

1. 01

   File NP-001 and the $25 fee

   SOS Form NP-001, Application for Notary Public Commission.

2. 02

   File the $5,000 bond and oath within 60 days

   The Governor must approve the application. The SOS assigns the commission start date and issues the certificate. FAQs: you may not notarize after filing and paying until those steps, plus the seal, are done.

3. 03

   Buy the seal showing your county of residence

   Mississippi notaries have statewide jurisdiction; the stamp still shows the county where you live.

4. 04

   Register on StampSide

   After you use the Mississippi Secretary of State site, create a public page: photo, where you work, and how clients reach you. Share the URL on emails and invoices. The page stays unpublished until a commission is on file.

Processing time

The SOS FAQs say the process should take less than one week if you submit a complete application with bond and oath.
