Qualifications

NRS 240.015: Nevada resident; at least 18; possess civil rights; complete the course of study in NRS 240.018. The SOS may appoint a resident of an adjoining state who maintains a Nevada place of business registered under chapter 76, or who is regularly employed in Nevada by an employer registered here.

Education and exam

NRS 240.018: at least 3 hours of instruction and an examination, in person or online, for first-time applicants and for renewals. The SOS training site: complete the Commission Course and the Commission Exam separately. Traditional notary training fee posted there: $45.00. Training, exams, and payments must be completed within 90 days for validity.

Bond

NRS 240.030: $10,000 bond to the State of Nevada, filed with the county clerk where you reside (or, if you live in an adjoining state, the Nevada county of your place of business or employment). Submit the county clerk’s certificate that the bond was filed. Term of the notary begins on the bond’s effective date.

Oath

Subscribe to the oath in Section 2 of Article 15 of the Nevada Constitution. Bond and oath are filed and recorded with the county clerk, who certifies that filing to the SOS.

Fee (as posted in NRS)

NRS 240.030: $35 to the Secretary of State with the application. Duplicate or amended certificate $10. The training site says training payment is processed through SilverFlume at application, not on the training site.

Term

NRS 240.020: 4 years, unless sooner removed.

How to get started

1. 01

   Complete SOS training and the exam

   training.nvsos-training.com. Save a screenshot or PDF of exam completion — the training site says that proof is required to issue the commission and is attached in SilverFlume.

2. 02

   File the $10,000 bond and oath with the county clerk

   Get the clerk’s filing certificate. You may not perform a notarial act after the bond’s effective date unless the SOS has issued the certificate of appointment (NRS 240.030(5)).

3. 03

   Submit the application, filing notice, training proof, and $35 through SilverFlume

   The SOS training site points payment and supporting documents to the SilverFlume portal. NRS 240.192: electronic notary is a separate registration ($50 in that statute) after you already hold a traditional commission, plus the e-registration course and exam ($45 training as posted on the training site).

4. 04

   Register on StampSide

   After you use the Nevada Secretary of State site, create a public page: photo, where you work, and how clients reach you. Share the URL on emails and invoices. The page stays unpublished until a commission is on file.

  Nevada law posts a $10,000 surety bond filed with the county clerk (NRS 240.030).

• Stamp or seal

  NRS 240.040: indelible, photographically reproducible ink stamp; name; “Notary Public, State of Nevada”; appointment expiration; certificate number; optional Great Seal; “nonresident” if you live in an adjoining state. Rectangle not larger than 1 inch by 2½ inches. A vendor may not make the stamp unless you present the certificate of appointment.

NRS 240.192: electronic notary registration is coterminous with the traditional appointment, requires an active notarial officer, the electronic course and exam, a $50 registration fee in that statute, and platform registration. The SOS training site posts $45 for eNotary training.
