Requirements

- Age and place
- At least 18. Resident of or employed in New Mexico. Able to read and write English.
- Education and exam
- Successfully complete the notary education course and exam.
- Record
- No denied, suspended, or revoked commission in another state; no felony or fraud/dishonesty conviction in the last five years.
- Bond
- Surety bond or functional equivalent of $10,000 from an entity authorized in New Mexico. The applicant’s signature on the bond must be notarized by a current New Mexico notary — not by you.
- Fee (as posted)
- $30.00 filing fee, e-check or credit card.

Get the $10,000 bond and a notarized oath
A current New Mexico notarial officer administers the oath. Do not notarize your own signature.
File online at enterprise.sos.nm.gov
Upload the course certificate, oath, and bond. Paper applications can be mailed on request.
Register on StampSide
After you use the New Mexico Secretary of State site, create a public page: photo, where you work, and how clients reach you. You can appear in the New Mexico directory. The page stays unpublished until a commission is on file.
