Requirements

Age and language
At least 18. U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident. Able to read and write English.
Place
Resident of North Dakota, or employed or practicing in North Dakota, or a resident of a bordering county in a reciprocal state.
Bond
$7,500 notary bond covering the commission term, from an insurance company of your choice (form SFN 19355).
Oath
Sign a Notary Oath of Office in the presence of a notary and submit it with the application.
Fee (as posted)
$36.
Term
Four years, from 12:00 a.m. on the commencement date to midnight on the expiration date.

How to get started

  1. Apply in FirstStop with bond and oath

    The name on the application must match how you will sign notarial acts.

  2. Wait for the Certificate of Authorization, then buy the stamp

    Vendors may not make the stamp without that authorization. Follow the SOS size and wording rules.

  3. Return a stamp impression

    Send the Verification of Notary Public Stamping Device form by the date they print. You may notarize only on or after the commencement date on the certificate.

  4. Register on StampSide

    After you use the North Dakota Secretary of State site, create a public page: photo, where you work, and how clients reach you. You can appear in the North Dakota directory. The page stays unpublished until a commission is on file.
