Requirements
What the official page states. If a topic is missing here, that page did not spell it out.
- Seal first
- Obtain the notary seal before filing. Rubber, electronic, or embossing; circle, square, or rectangle; name exactly as commissioned; “Notary Public” and “South Dakota.” A rubber stamp must also include the word “seal.”
- Oath
- Complete the oath portion of the application. Sign exactly as the seal reads.
- Bond
- Effective July 1, 2025, a surety bond is no longer required to apply. If you still buy one, do not file it with the SOS.
- Fee (as posted)
- $30.00 filing fee. Check to Secretary of State.
How to get started
Buy the seal, then complete the application
Make a legible imprint in the box. Residence must be a physical residential address.
Sign the oath and mail
Secretary of State, 500 E. Capitol Ave., Suite 204, Pierre, SD 57501. You may notarize only after you receive the commission certificate.
Register on StampSide
After you use the South Dakota Secretary of State site, create a public page: photo, where you work, and how clients reach you. You can appear in the South Dakota directory. The page stays unpublished until a commission is on file.

South Dakota requires the seal impression on the application itself. Wording: your name, “Notary Public,” “South Dakota,” and “seal” on a rubber stamp.
