Requirements

Four-year commission
U.S. residents who are at least 18, have the equivalent of an 8th-grade education, are familiar with notary duties, and do not have an arrest or conviction record that bars a position of public trust.
Exam
Pass the notary exam with 90% or better within one year of applying (four-year path). Print the certificate.
Oath and bond
Oath of Office completed in front of a current notarial officer. $500 bond (four-year path).
Attorneys
A permanent commission is available only to attorneys licensed in Wisconsin, with a certificate of good standing.

  2. Complete the application, oath, and $500 bond forms

    Four-year applicants mail or file as DFI instructs. Attorneys use the permanent-commission path.

  3. Buy the official seal or rubber stamp

    Must contain “State of Wisconsin,” “Notary Public,” and your printed name including full current last name. No professional titles on the seal.

  4. Register on StampSide

    After you use the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions site, create a public page: photo, where you work, and how clients reach you. You can appear in the Wisconsin directory. The page stays unpublished until a commission is on file.
