Qualifications

SOS education presentation: at least 18; U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident or otherwise lawfully present; resident of Wyoming, or a place of employment in the state, or spouse or legal dependent of military personnel on active duty in Wyoming.

Education and exam

Application: review the Notary Education Presentation at sos.wyo.gov/Services/Notaries.aspx and complete the examination on the form (W.S. § 32-3-121(a)). At least fourteen (14) correct answers are required. If you already completed education and an exam through an SOS-approved vendor (the SOS page names the National Notary Association and the Notary Public Association), attach that certificate and skip Part III. Education is required for each six-year term, including renewals.

$60 check or money order to the Wyoming Secretary of State. Credit cards are not accepted. Hard copy only — deliver or mail to Herschler Building East, 122 W 25th St, Ste 100, Cheyenne, WY 82002.

Oath

Part IV must be notarized before submission. The SOS cannot notarize it for you.

Term

Six years.

Bond

The application’s next-steps list: a bond or E&O is optional and will NOT be filed with the county or the state.

How to get started

1. 01

   Complete the education presentation (or an approved vendor course)

   The presentation says it supplies the answers needed to pass at 70% (14 of the exam questions).

2. 02

   Fill all four parts of the Application/Renewal, including the exam

   The same form is used for initial commissions and renewals.

3. 03

   Have Part IV notarized and mail with $60

   After processing, the SOS emails the appointment letter and commission certificate. Buy the stamp only after that letter — stamp requirements are posted on the SOS notary page. Remote notarization: the application asks whether you intend to perform it; Wyoming law allows remote acts with an audio/visual recording, as the education presentation states.

4. 04

   Register on StampSide

   After you use the Wyoming Secretary of State site, create a public page: photo, where you work, and how clients reach you. Share the URL on emails and invoices. The page stays unpublished until a commission is on file.

Remote / electronic notarization

The education presentation: Wyoming law allows remote notarizations. Personal appearance includes physical and remote appearance. All remote notarizations require an audio/visual recording. The application asks you to declare whether you intend to perform remote notarizations.
